What to Wear

What to Wear for Your Session

Wardrobe has a major impact on the final look and feel of your images. The best outfits support the story of the session without distracting from the person being photographed.

Senior Portraits

  • Bring 3 to 5 outfit options.
  • Include a casual outfit, a polished outfit, a formal or dressier look, and something personal.
  • Consider sports uniforms, jackets, instruments, dancewear, college gear, cap and gown, or meaningful accessories.
  • Avoid large logos unless they are intentional.
  • Choose textures such as denim, leather, knits, layers, jackets, dresses, or structured pieces.
  • Coordinate colors with the season and location.

Dance Portraits

  • Bring clean costumes, tights, shoes, warmups, and backup pieces.
  • Bring extra tights and appropriate underlayers.
  • Avoid heavily wrinkled or worn costume pieces.
  • Include both technical looks and creative/editorial pieces.
  • Bring hair supplies, pins, spray, rosin if needed, and a water bottle.
  • Make sure shoes are clean enough for the shooting surface.

Creative Sessions

  • For rain, powder, or editorial sessions, choose clothing that supports movement and visual drama.
  • Expect certain pieces to get wet, dusty, or stained depending on the session type.
  • Flowing fabric, strong silhouettes, and simple color palettes usually photograph well.
  • Bring towels, backup clothes, and footwear that can handle the environment.

General Styling Tips

  • Steam or iron clothing before the session.
  • Try everything on before arriving.
  • Bring more options than you think you need.
  • Avoid tiny busy patterns that can distract on camera.
  • Think in full outfits, including shoes, accessories, and layers.
